Electromagnetic Product Design
Magnet-Schultz of America routinely becomes deeply involved in many aspects of our customer's product design and development process. We do everything from:
- Making simple modifications to both the magnetic and the physical characteristics of our standard products, to
- Developing fully custom designs of Electromagnetic actuators and Electromagnets, to
- Assisting in the design of select mechanical components within the customer's system, incorporating the Electromagnetic functionality into these components, thereby creating a totally new Value Added Assembly.
We can offer Electromechanical engineering assistance in every phase of the customer's product development cycle, doing whatever is necessary in order to help quickly bring the customer's new products and ideas to market.

ElectroMechanical Engineering Capabilities and Tools
Some of the many tools we use, and capabilities we bring to our engineering development and manufacturing efforts are as follows:
1) ElectroMechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Software:

Solid Works: 2D and 3D CAD Software.
Ansoft: Magnetic Simulation FEA software, both 2D and 3D.
TK Solver: Mathematical modeling and equation solving software.
Lab View: Software used for automated testing procedures and data collection.
A) Manufacturing CAD/CAM Software:
Part Maker:
This software utilizes the .dwg electronic drawing format (applicable to our internal drawings, as well as drawings which are sent to us by our customers) in order to create the computer files which are then used to program our CNC turning and milling machines.
The Part Maker software is also extremely useful for speeding up our quoting and sampling process for machined parts.
2) Unique ElectroMechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Test Equipment:
Life Cycle and Functional Testing:
We have the ability to perform both functional and life cycle testing on all of our products.
We can also work with the customer to establish a meaningful life cycle and functional test program for our products when they are installed into our customer's product. Such combined testing often reveals many design and material related issues which might not otherwise come to light.
Force/Stroke Testing:
We have specialized equipment that is used in our engineering labs, as well as in production, to precisely measure and record the force/stroke characteristics of our linear actuators and Electromagnets.
Environmental Temperature Testing:
At Magnet-Schultz of America, we have the capability to do both high temperature and low temperature cycling to determine the temperature related performance limits of all the products we manufacture. This equipment is also used to perform thermal shock and water ingression tests on those products which require confirmation of extended environmental capabilities.
We have the added benefit of the vast engineering and test capabilities of our parent company, Magnet-Schultz of Memmingen Germany. MSM can perform even more extensive mechanical and environmental testing (tests that range from salt spray and humidity, to full shock and vibration scenarios).
We also have strong relationships with local testing and certification laboratories and facilities that can provide nearly every conceivable test paradigm needed for design validation and verification.
Hydraulic Fatigue Test Equipment for Hydraulic Solenoid Tubes:
We have specialized equipment which is utilized to perform pressure testing on the solenoid tubes which MSA manufactures for use on hydraulic valves.
This high pressure test can apply up to 10,000 psi. pulses of hydraulic fluid, at specified time intervals, to the inside of the hydraulic solenoid tube. The purpose of this test is to determine the point at which the tube might experience mechanical fatigue and failure. All tests are done in conformance with National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) standards.
Mechanical Fatigue Test Equipment for Hydraulic Solenoid Tubes:
This specialized equipment performs a destructive bend test on the hydraulic solenoid tubes which MSA manufactures. It assists in determining the integrity of both the materials of which the tubes are made, as well as the manufacturing processes which are used to produce them. This test is performed on an AQL basis throughout every production run to insure that our processes and our products are within specification.
3) ElectroMechanical Engineering Prototyping Capabilities:
Magnet-Schultz of America has a complete machine shop which allows us to quickly produce specialized components for all of our prototype designs.
Production intent prototypes are manufactured utilizing standard production equipment, thereby ensuring that the most representative example of the product's long term physical characteristics and performance capabilities are achieved.

4) A Brief Biography of our ElectroMechanical Engineering Team:
Magnet-Schultz of America has six experienced project engineers with more than 90 years of solenoid, magnetic and mechanical design experience.
The educational background of our engineering staff includes individuals who have mechanical and/or electrical engineering degrees. Our Director of Engineering also has a doctorate degree in engineering.
In addition to their solenoid design background, our engineers have extensive industry experience which includes transformer design, electrical switch design, the design of pneumatic valves and hydraulic valves, and the design of appliances and security systems.
With an average longevity at Magnet-Schultz of America in excess of 9 years, the experience our engineering team brings to every new project helps to provide the rapid "time-to-market" that our customer's demand for their new products.
